There are many reasons why you should sign up. But, the fact that it’s a powerful tool to connect with potential job seekers should be your main one. It’s estimated that 97% of recruiters use LinkedIn every day to find prospective candidates.

Although, being a LinkedIn member is not enough to find a job! If you have a poor profile, nobody will even look at it, let alone consider you for any position.

I’ve decided to divide the topic into two parts. Firstly, I’m going to share some generic advice that will be useful for every section of your profile. And secondly, I’ll focus on specific tips to apply to these sections. There is a lot to talk about, so we better dive right in…

Why do you use LinkedIn?

The first thing to keep in mind is what your goal is when you create a LinkedIn profile. For 60% of people, it’s because they are looking for new job opportunities, but it differs from person to person.

Do you want to expand your network? Are you looking for new employees for your company? Do you want to build or enhance your business or personal brand? Whatever your reason, you should always keep it in mind while filling in your profile. LinkedIn is not another social media, so everything that you write should be relevant to your goal.

Every section is essential

Filling in all the sections of your profile is crucial, so it appears among the first results when a recruiter searches for candidates. This is important because this is how the LinkedIn algorithm works, and there is not a lot we can do about it. If you want your profile to come up on the first few pages, you need to fill it in thoroughly.

Pay attention to your writing style

The way you choose to write will affect the power of your profile. If every section is easy to read and engaging, there is more of a chance that a reader will look at all of it instead of stopping after your summary. Also, keep in mind that people will more likely use their mobile to read what you write, and therefore your style should reflect that.

How can you do it?

  • Use short sentences
  • Include no more than three sentences in a paragraph
  • Separate your paragraphs with a blank line
  • Use simple language
  • Don’t be repetitive
  • Use bullet points
  • Write in the first person

Use keywords

Keywords are crucial to ensure that you can be found on LinkedIn and are what recruiters use in their online searches. So, if they’re not used in your profile or used in the wrong section, you will not come up in their results and will rank very low. You can use keywords all over your profile, but the best sections where you want to include them are the headline, the summary, the job titles, and your skillset paragraph.

If you don’t know what the best keywords are for your profile, check the requirements list of a relevant job description. The words that show up more frequently are the ones that you want to use.

Be aware of what other users see

To understand which section you should focus on first, think of what other users see on your profile when you appear in their results. The first things they notice are your profile picture and headline. If these are good enough to catch their attention, they will carry on reading. After that, they might be interested in your work experience, skillset, or anything else you’ve published.

Therefore, profile picture, headline, and summary are the most important sections you should start working on.

Be active

Your level of activity is another factor that will influence how high you rank on LinkedIn. There are many ways to do that, but the best one is to have a lot of connections. The larger your network, the better!

Follow influencers in your field, frequently post engaging content, and share other people’s content. But don’t forget what your goal is! Whatever is on your profile should be relevant. If you’re a restaurant manager looking for new opportunities, publishing content about the automotive industry will not help you to rank higher!

We should never forget what LinkedIn is. Since it is the world’s largest professional network on the internet, the word professional should be our mantra. Why somebody would use a profile picture of them having a beer at the pub is still a mystery to me. The profile picture is what will convince an employer to learn more about you.

Keep it professional; it shouldn’t contain any other person and should clearly show your face. Lastly, don’t forget that a warm smile is always effective! Think of it like the picture you would use for a resume.

Background photo

Regarding the background photo, you definitely have more freedom. Still, it’s important to keep it relevant to your current job, the position you’re looking for, or the services you’re offering. If you’re an outdoor guide, a nice picture with your happy clients kayaking down the Colorado River is great. But if you’re a financial advisor, a photo of you hiking Mt. Whitney is meaningless.

A popular choice is to use a personalized banner that contains information about your skills, accomplishments, or services that you offer. While some recruiters find it useful, others hate it, and therefore I would always choose a nice picture over a banner. It’s a much safer choice!

Headline

Some people tend to overcomplicate a simple thing like a headline. The best advice I can give you is to keep it short and relevant to the job, tailor it to your specialization, and include keywords.

If you want to be found by a recruiter, it should match exactly what they will type in the search box. Therefore, forget those creative job titles that are so popular nowadays and stick to a more simple and professional one. You might decide to add your most relevant skill, but in this case, avoid using more than a couple of words.

Summary

The summary is arguably the most important section that you have on your profile. Use my tips and make sure you spend plenty of time getting it right, especially if you want to convince the recruiters that you’re a potentially good candidate.

Here are few things to keep in mind:

  • Write no more than five paragraphs of two or three short sentences each
  • Highlight your accomplishments using statistics and numbers
  • Focus more on your hard skills than soft skills
  • Define exactly what you’re looking for
  • Don’t be afraid to show off your results
  • Only mention something from your personal life if it’s relevant
  • Remember to use keywords!

Work Experience

If your summary performs as you expect, the recruiters will briefly check your working history as they are going through hundreds of resumes. Therefore job titles are more important than descriptions, and again keywords are essential. If your job list is too long, skip what is not relevant so you’ll keep the attention on what is important.

The job description should be concise and effective. To do that, focus more on your accomplishments rather than your responsibilities. At the end of the day, a recruiter already knows what the duties of a specific position are, but they don’t know how effectively you can perform those duties.

Skills section

This is the time to really show off. LinkedIn allows you to list up to 50 skills on your profile, and there is no reason why you shouldn’t take full advantage of that possibility. If you’re concerned about sounding a bit too arrogant, don’t worry about that. The recruiters are aware that you’re doing it just that to make sure you include more keywords, and they’re completely fine with it.

If, like the majority of us, you can’t come up with 50 skills relevant to the job, then use synonyms. LinkedIn will help you with that by suggesting valid alternatives.

Educational background

The same advice I gave you before applies to the education section. Treat it like you would do in a resume and keep it concise and straight to the point. The most important information is your degree, your major, and the university you attended. You can even decide to skip your high school section if you already graduated from college.

Recommendations

Having at least a few recommendations from some of your past employers, customers, and colleagues will make your profile more credible. You don’t need a huge list of recommendations, especially if they come from people that haven’t worked with you long enough to make their statements viable.

Certifications

If you have any certifications or licenses that are related to the job you’re looking for, don’t forget to fill in this section. Chances are there is a recruiter out there looking for somebody who meets that specific requirement.

Profile URL

LinkedIn automatically assigns a random URL to any profile that is created. It is extremely long and full of meaningless numbers and letters, and therefore it makes it harder for other people to connect with you. However, it is possible to customize your profile URL. By doing so, it will also help you rank higher on any search engine.

The best possible URL consists of your full name. Unfortunately, if you have a common name, chances are that somebody else is already using it. If that’s the case, try to reverse the order of name and surname or add your year of birth. Customizing your URL is very simple. Head to the edit section of your profile, and you’ll find the “Edit your custom URL” icon.

Interests

As already mentioned, LinkedIn is different from other social media, and even the interests section should be treated professionally.

Everything that you add here should still be relevant to your job. While the recruiters could be curious to see something about your personality, they still don’t need to know anything about your private life. The best way to use the interests section is by showing the passion for your job that goes beyond your working hours.
