Company History
The Walt Disney Company was founded by Walter Elias Disney and his brother Roy on October 16, 1923. The company started out as a cartoon studio in Los Angeles, California. Disney initially produced many short, animated movies but went on to create famous cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
Since then, Disney has grown into a multinational mass media and entertainment company across its multiple business segments, including but not limited to theme parks and resorts (under Walt Disney Parks and Resorts), studio entertainment (The Walt Disney Studios), consumer products, and interactive media (Walt Disney Interactive Media).
Theme Parks
Disneyland Park was created to bring happiness to children and families as a whole. It wasn’t until 1955, when Disneyland had its official grand opening in Anaheim, California, that the company began to plant the seeds for global dominance in family entertainment that exists today.
What made Disneyland so special for visitors was its immersive storytelling and attention to detail in attractions, down to the landscaping.
A global enterprise!
Fast forward to 2019, and Disney operates 11 theme parks worldwide, with an additional two under construction in Shanghai, China, and Anaheim, California. These will bring the total number of Disney theme parks up to 13.
In addition, there are now six Disneyland Resort Hotels (one more is under construction) and 31 other licensed hotels around the world that carry the Disney brand name (Walt Disney Travel Company). The company’s reach has expanded beyond just theme parks – studio entertainment is another strong pillar for Disney.
Entertainment
The Walt Disney Studios produces movies across different genres, which have found success both domestically and abroad. For example, Black Panther became the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time, not just in the United States but globally as well.
In order to capture more market share and appeal to a wider audience, The Walt Disney Studios has also created its own streaming service called Disney+. For a monthly price of $13, subscribers have access to an extensive library.
More than just animation…
This includes movies and TV shows (including exclusive original content) from both The Walt Disney Studios and other studios under the Disney umbrella, such as Marvel Entertainment and Lucasfilm. This is in addition to Disney’s existing portfolio of networks, including ABC, ESPN, Freeform, and Hulu.
Merchandise
Disney Consumer Products & Interactive Media (DCPI) is responsible for merchandising intellectual property across different product categories, which are then sold through retailers around the world. This segment is also responsible for managing the company’s online and mobile presence.
A recent example of successful DCPI product placement is with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. In anticipation of the movie, Disney Consumer Products released a wide range of merchandise that included toys, apparel, bedding, and home decor.
A knack for advertising…
This was followed up by further product releases for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). As a result, Disney Consumer Products reported record-breaking $59 billion in retail sales for fiscal year 2018 (ended September 29th), an increase of 11% from the previous year.
