Does Target Do Money Orders (2023 Guide)

Does Target Do Money Orders

Even in this technological age, money orders are a popular way to pay for your goods, whether in-store or online. They make cash payments safer and also take the stress out of carrying around large amounts of money with you.

If you frequent one of the 1,938 Target locations across the US, you might find yourself asking, “Does Target do money orders?” Let’s find out…

Target And Money Orders

Unfortunately, it’s a no. As of October 2023, Target doesn’t supply money orders to its customers. Nor do they cash them or accept them as a form of payment, either in-store or online. In fact, Target has never dealt in money orders, and with the likes of the Target App and pre-paid target cash cards, it’s doubtful that they ever will.

What Exactly Is a Money Order?

Well, a money order is a certified piece of paper that has a monetary value. It’s like paying by cash, only safer. It works in a similar way to a check, in that you’ll need to provide the payee’s and your details.

These added security measures make it almost impossible for anyone except the intended recipient to cash it out. Plus, it will never bounce like a check can, as it is a pre-paid order. Meaning you’ll need to pay upfront the amount you want the order to be, as well as a small processing fee before it becomes valid.

Where Can I Get A Money Order?

7-eleven

If you need to get a money order, you can head to several places, including other superstores, pharmacies, supermarkets, and convenience stores. Here is a list of places where you can purchase money orders.

  • 7-Eleven
  • CVS Pharmacy
  • Kmart
  • Kroger
  • Meijer
  • Publix
  • Rite Aid pharmacies
  • Safeway
  • United States Post Office locations
  • Walmart Money Centers
  • Western Union locations
  • MoneyGram locations
  • Banking Institutions
  • Credit Union

Money orders are prepaid and don’t include your banking account information. You can purchase money orders from these locations with your debit or pre-paid cash card, cash, or traveler’s checks. Some locations might offer payment with credit cards or checks but not many. Most institutions prefer to have the “money up front” rather than depending on credit lenders.

Does Target Do Money Orders – How Much Is It?

Does Target Do Money Orders – How Much Is It?

You can be charged anywhere between $0.89 and $4.99 for each money order, and most have a limit of $500 – $1000. As this fee is on top of the amount you are purchasing the money order for, the actual amount payable will be a combination of the money order amount + the fee. This total will need to be paid in full before being given the money order.

For example, if you were to get a money order at Publix, you will be charged a small fee of between $0.89 – $0.99. Say you need a $360 money order. The fee for providing this service is $0.94. So the total amount payable is $360 + $0.94 = $360.94.

The Post Office fees are different…

However, if you are at the United States Post Office to get a money order, you’ll see that things work a little differently. For a money order to the value of $500, you’ll need to pay an extra $1.65. And, for a money order between $500.01 – $1000, the fee increases to $2.20.

These are just a few examples of the different costs of money orders. It’s always best to check limits at each location to see how much they differ. Also, it’s important to note that even though some locations will sell you a money order, they might not cash them for you.
