Recycling Plastic Bags At Target
Yes, they do. At every single Target, you will find recycling kiosks located in-store to place your unwanted single-use plastic bags and plastic packaging waste. These are well-signposted, easy to use, and usually found around the shop entrance.
What Else Does Target Recycle?
You can also take your empty plastic bottles and metal cans to recycle at Target. Along with glass jars and bottles, MP3 players, plastic packaging, smartphones, small electronics, and even ink cartridges.
Target has been partnered with REPREVE since 2010. Throughout this time, they have worked together to use the equivalent of one billion bottles worth of recycled plastic and created many of their own brand products from them. Want to know what kind of things I’m talking about?
Environmentally friendly and convenient…
These on-point lunch totes are not only stylish and modern. But they also work extremely well to keep your food and drinks cold and fresh throughout the day! And these are just two examples of how recycled plastics can be turned into manmade fibers and reused for sustainable bags, instead of ending up in the landfill.
Who Is REPREVE?
REPREVE is a highly innovative recycling company that turns plastic waste from drink bottles and packaging into certifiable, traceable, high-performance yarn and filling fibers. The yarn is DNA encrypted, just like us humans, and can therefore be traced back to the product’s origin, which is super unique.
REPREVE products are sought after in every major textile region and are the driving force behind most sustainable products in the world. According to the company, they are currently partnered with over 130 big brands, including the likes of Roxy and Guess. They will no doubt add many more to their list in the coming times as the world shifts towards a more sustainable future.
Endless choice of products…
They primarily make four types of synthetic fibers from recycled bottles. These include Polyester Yarn, Polyester Staple Fiber, Polyester Resin Balls, and Nylon Filament Yarn. In turn, these are then used to make numerous items. I’m talking about thermal leggings and phone covers, car interiors, and an extensive array of reusable bags!
Check out the list below of just a few of the items they’ve had a huge hand in creating:
- Moisture-wicking apparel for athletes.
- Running shoes and flip-flops.
- Reusable totes and bags.
- Car interiors.
- Environmentally Friendly surf gear and clothing.
- Thermo-regulating pants for hikers.
- Odor control tees.
- Fire-resistant sofas.
- Water-repellant phone cases.
So now we know about one of Target’s awesome recycling partners, let’s find out more about what the company is doing to lessen the impact of their plastic.
What Else Is Target Doing To Reduce Plastic Waste?
Target is one of the founding companies behind “Beyond The Bag,” along with CVS and Walmart. The idea is to create a sustainable, reusable, or completely biodegradable plastic shopping bag alternative.
Currently, every plastic bag currently used at Target’s checkouts is made with 40% recycled plastics. You can already choose from a huge selection of reusable shopping bags, including an in-store kiosk where you can check out reusable bags.
Save the environment and get a discount!
You then shop with them, take them home, and when they are old and worn, you bring them back to the kiosk to return them for fresh new ones. Plus, you’ll also receive a five-cent discount for each reusable bag that you produce at the checkout.
In 2021 Target was responsible for recycling 11,259 tons of electronics along with 12,370 tons of plastic bags and shrink wrap. That’s a mammoth effort! They have a policy in place with their plastic hangers which is also very cool.
A closed-loop recycling program…
Garment hangers are generally used seven to ten times in-store, and when they become broken, they are recycled in a closed-loop program. This means they are either repaired or broken down to make brand-new hangers out of the old ones.
Therefore no new plastic is incorporated, and no virgin plastic either. Surprisingly, this initiative has been ongoing since 1994, nearing 30 years!
Get rewarded for your recycling efforts!
Another initiative Target has is recycling old baby car seats and booster seats. Twice a year, you can take your unwanted items to Target for recycling, and in return, you’ll get great deals on new baby items!
Yet another way Target is trying to reduce its plastic carbon footprint is through the use of certain textiles. The Global Fashion Agenda is another one of Target’s awesome partners working together to try and limit the waste of textiles when making garments. They also partner with Circ, which is in the business of converting end-of-season, overstock, and end-of-life textiles into new raw materials.
Targets Plastic Promise
Target has set some goals which they’ve pledged to be in full swing by 2025, in conjunction with the U.S. Plastics Pact.
- Eliminating problematic or unnecessary packaging.
- Ensuring all plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
- Effectively recycling or composting 50% of its plastic packaging.
- Ensuring 30% of all its plastic packaging is made from bio-based or recycled elements.
