Does Verizon own Straight Talk? (2023 Guide)

does verizon own straight talk

As of 2023, many Straight Talk customers may have noticed changes to the network, such as increased speed, improved range of coverage, and better customer service. These changes have resulted in many people asking what has happened to Straight Talk.

So, I’ve decided to take a closer look at why these changes are happening and what it means for their customers. Let’s find out Does Verizon own Straight Talk and, if so, the benefits this may have.

Who are Straight Talk?

Who are Straight Talk?

Straight Talk is a subsidiary of TracFone and is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) and one of the only no-contract plan mobile phone companies in the US. The company is the nation’s largest and most dependable 4G LTE network.

The mobile phone giant does not own any telecommunication towers but runs off other companies such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Founded in Miami, Florida, in 1996, they quickly expanded, and their products are now available in a staggering 90,000 retail locations across the country, including nearly all Walmart stores and online.

Who are Verizon?

Who are Verizon?

Verizon is a telecommunications company that offers a wide range of wireless services. They are a subsidiary of Verizon Communications and is the second largest wireless provider in the US after AT&T.

The company provides services to 118.8 million subscribers across the Country through its 120,000 employees. Founded in Deleware in 1983, Verizon grew incredibly fast and today has a net income of a massive $22.24 billion.

Now that you know more about the companies, let’s get to the question of… does Verizon own Straight Talk? What does this mean for its customers? And how will this affect the network?

Straight Talk and Verizon

As of late 2021, Verizon purchased TracFone, the mother company of Straight Talk, for $6 billion. With this purchase, Verizon now owns Straight Talk and the other companies that are subsidiaries of TracFone.

Verizon has always been rated higher than Straight Talk for its download speeds, customer service, and network coverage. But does this mean Straight Talk subscribers will get the same after the purchase? Let’s find out.

Has Straight Talk been completely bought out by Verizon?

Has Straight Talk been completely bought out by Verizon?

The short answer is yes. When Verizon purchased TracFone, it also acquired Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Net 10, and the other brands in the TracFone family. Regardless of the purchase, Straight Talk will still be offered as a stand-alone service.

Positives for Costumers of Straight Talk

There are quite a few positives for Straight Talk customers to take from this deal. Verizon is a much larger company and has always been rated higher across most categories. Previous customers of Straight Talk will now have a much larger range of connections, better customer service, and faster download speeds. All of this while still enjoying the cheap, no-contract plans they have to offer.

Straight Talk vs. Verizon, Who provides better service?

Straight Talk vs. Verizon, Who provides better service?

The short and sweet answer is Verizon, but let me break it down by comparing download and upload speeds, costs, and subscribers.

Upload and download speeds

Verizon offers faster upload and download speeds than Straight Talk, with download speeds of 53.3 Mbps (Megabits per second) and upload speeds of 17.5 Mpbs.

In comparison, Straight Talk has download speeds of 31.1 Mbps and upload speeds of 15.6 Mpbs.

Cost of plans

For this comparison, I will only look at the family plan both companies offer. Verizon’s family plan costs $140 per month. Straight Talk has the cheaper option, costing $90 per month.

Subscribers

Before the purchase of Straight Talk by Verizon, the company had roughly nine million users. Verizon had a much bigger network with 121.3 million subscribers.

Does Verizon own Straight Talk? – Final Thoughts

While many Straight Talk customers have noticed the changes in speed and service range, it is not commonly known that Verizon have purchased Straight Talk. The deal of late 2021, where Verizon acquired TracFone, has been positive for both companies.

Straight Talk may be a much smaller company, but its plans are much more affordable, and they also cater to customers with bad credit. However, Verizon’s customer service, download speeds, and range are rated higher.

The combination of these two companies should see a good mix of cheap plans with improved speed, range, and customer service.

All the best with your mobile plan from Verizon or Straight Talk.

  1. Verizon buying straighttalk is this why the service is so bad. A couple of years ago I exclaimed how great it was. Now the web site has always been difficult. But the live phone support use to be efficient

  2. Wow! I have had exactly the opposite experience now that Straight Talk has been bought by Verizon. Slower and spottier internet and as of today, I’ve lost connectivity at my home which was a big part of why I went w/ ST in the first place. 25 minutes on the phone w/ customer service yielded no positive results.
