Does Walmart Cash Two-Party Checks?

does walmart cash two-party checks

Have you ever heard of a two-party check?

I hadn’t until my aunt sent me one made out to both my sister and me. Two-party checks are something that not everyone will come across within their lifetime. And after 30-plus years on this planet, this was my first! Walmart is America’s biggest retailer, and with over 4,600 stores nationwide, the majority of these have a Money Center located in-store.

So let’s find out… Does Walmart cash two-party checks?

What Is A Two-Party Check?

First, let’s get a better understanding of what a two-party check is. A two-party check is a check that has been written with two names to receive the funds

This means that the check is payable to the two people whose names appear on the Pay-To-The-Order-Of line on it. The reason behind this is that both people are meant to receive a split of the funds rather than it going to just one or the other.

What Is A Two-Party Check

Both parties usually need to be present…

To cash the check, you’ll both need to find the time to join forces and head out (with your driver’s licenses or government IDs) to get it done together.

However, this rule of both needing to be present doesn’t always apply to two-party checks. It usually only applies if the check has been written in a certain way. And it’s everything to do with the simple yet sizable difference between “And” and “Or.”

So What’s The Difference Between “And” and “Or”?

Surprisingly, it’s a huge difference, and here’s why…

If the check is made out to Tom Lane AND Jenny Anderson, then both will need to be present to cash it. Exactly the scenario mentioned above. However, if it is made out to Tom Lane OR Jenny Anderson, then most financial institutions and cashing centers will usually allow the deposit or cashing of it with just one of you.

So What’s The Difference Between “And” and “Or”

Meaning that either party whose name is on the check can deposit the check into their bank account – no matter if it’s a single or joint account.

It’s as simple as that.

So, Will Walmart Cash My Two-Party Check?

It’s a resounding yes! Walmart does cash two-party checks and most other types of checks, for that matter. Walmart will happily cash a two-party check to the value of $200 or below and will charge you $6 per check to do so.

Meanwhile, a regular check has a cashing limit of $5000. This even temporarily extends to $7500 from January to April to accommodate tax refunds and other government payouts. Therefore, the main difference between the two is the limits imposed on each, and as you can see, they have quite a difference in amounts.

Can I Cash Handwritten Two-Party Checks At Walmart?

Unfortunately, with Walmarts current policy, it’s a no for handwritten checks. Currently, they only accept printed checks for instant cashing as handwritten checks tend to run a higher risk of fraudulent activity. And are far more likely to bounce due to insufficient funds.

Can Walmart Refuse To Cash My Two-Party Check?

Absolutely yes, they can. There are a lot of reasons that your Walmart associate might refuse to cash your two-party check or, indeed, any check.

Can Walmart Refuse To Cash My Two-Party Check

Usually, the reason will fall into one of these categories:

Any Other Tips When It Comes To Cashing Checks?

Yes, did you know that there is only a specific window from when your check has been issued to when you need to have cashed or deposited it? For example, business, personal, and payroll checks are usually valid for six months or 180 days from the date issued. While others have the phrase “VOID AFTER 90 DAYS” printed on them.

Where At Walmart Can I Cash My Two-Party Check?

As you head to Walmart to cash your two-party check, you can either go to the Money Center, the Customer Services desk, or even to the cashier at the register. Yes, that’s right, even with the cashier!

If your local store is open 24/7, then you’ll be able to cash your two-party check (up to a certain amount) at any time of the day or night, right there at the register. It might take a little longer for the on-duty store manager to organize the funds, but if you are happy to wait, then they will be happy to assist.

Does Walmart Verify Checks Before Accepting To Be Cashed?

Yes, it does; it uses the system TeleCheck, which allows Walmart associates to verify all the checks that come through their doors.

TeleCheck digitally runs the check through its specially designed and secure system. This captures all of the banking information, including account and amount details. Which then offers an almost instant endorsement to the Walmart employee as to whether to accept the customer’s check or not.

The Telecheck system is fast and easy…

This system is super fast and is set up at the Money Center, Customer Services Desk, and the registers, which is how you can cash your check at one any one of them. If your check is approved, all you’ll need to do is show your ID and sign either electronically or on a paper receipt.
