Dolph Lundgren had an impressive physique when he was in his prime. Even in the present day, he is still an imposing figure. And during his long acting career, he has undoubtedly used this to his benefit to secure many movie roles.
As a result, the Dolph Lundgren net worth number is more than healthy. However, before I look at that, I first want to take a closer look at the man and life behind all the action movies.
Early Life and Education
Dolf Lundgren was born Hans Lundgren on the 3rd of November 1957 in Stockholm. His mother was a language teacher, while his father was an engineer and an economist who worked for the Swedish government. He has three siblings, two sisters, Katrina and Annika, and a younger brother, Johan.
During his childhood years, he experienced physical violence from his father. This was primarily directed at him and his mother. He has also gone on record stating that his father also mentally abused him by belittling him and calling him a failure.
Despite this, he has no ill will toward his father and used it as motivation to show that he could make something of his life. He channeled this into his studies, judo, karate, and physical contact sports.
As a teenager, he also hit the gym and began lifting weights…
Dolph Lundgren was a gifted and hard-working straight ‘A’ student who was inclined towards science and engineering. His father encouraged him in this area and encouraged him to go to America to further his studies.
Consequently, in the mid-70s, he spent time at Washington State University, as well as Clemson University, on scholarships, studying chemical engineering. However, these studies were interrupted in the late-70s when he was forced to return to Sweden for his compulsory military service.
Once he returned to Sweden, he subsequently completed his degree in chemical engineering at the Stockholm Royal Institute of Technology. Then, in a decision that would dramatically change the course of Dolph Lundgren’s life, he moved to Australia and gained an MSC at the University of Sydney.
So, what changed?
By the time he got to Australia in 1982, he was already an incredible physical specimen and a well-trained martial artist. He had built himself up and attained his second black belt in karate. Additionally, he had represented his country in a World Championship karate tournament. And he was the European Kyokushin Karate champion in 1980 and 1981.
With these credentials and standing at an imposing 6’5”, he was a natural to work as a nightclub bouncer. So, needing to make money to further his studies, he took a job in the infamous Kings Cross area of Sydney.
It was whilst working as a bouncer that things took an unexpected turn…
One night, he met the enigmatic singer, model, and actress Grace Jones, who persuaded him to be her bodyguard. Not that you would think she needed one; she was scary enough on her own.
The two soon became close, and before long, they also became lovers. When Grace Jones had to return to America, not wanting to be apart, she persuaded Dolph to return with her to New York. Since he had already won a cultural exchange scholarship at MIT in Boston, which he was waiting to begin, it seemed like a good way to kill time.
In Manhattan, he got a job working once more as a bouncer. This time at ‘The Limelight’ nightclub. He began rubbing shoulders with icons like Andy Warhol and quickly became fascinated with the lifestyle of actors, models, singers, and artists. It was all a long way from engineering, but he was sucked in and persuaded to try his hand at acting.
His opportunity to break into acting happened when Grace Jones was working on the 1985 movie, A View to a Kill, which was the 14th Bond movie starring Roger Moore. Grace suggested he try out for a small role as a KGB hitman. Dolf successfully landed the part, and unbeknown to him at the time; he was now a movie actor.
Lured by the bright lights, although he did attend the beginning of his MIT course for a couple of weeks, he quit his studies. He decided his future was in movies, and so he set about looking for his next role.
He did not have to wait long…
Despite some stiff competition, he landed the role of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. This was huge because the first three Rocky movies had all been massive box-office hits. Despite his inexperience, he played one of the main characters opposite Sylvester Stallone as the would-be world champion contender.
Rocky IV was another huge hit. And, in just two movies, both released in 1985, Dolph Lundgren was a star. From this point, his output was nothing short of staggering. Dolf Lundgren has appeared in over 80 movies. And, as I write this, he also has five in post-production and still waiting to be released.
His formidable stature and martial parts prowess have made him the perfect action movie hero or villain. So, unsurprisingly, this is where he has concentrated most of his time, and he has done so brilliantly. Over ten years from 1985, he appeared in 15 more movies. The most memorable Dolph Lundgren movie from that time was Universal Soldier in 1992.
He was riding high…
But, for whatever reason, by 1995, the major Hollywood roles dried up. Undeterred, he turned his hand to acting in movies predominantly made for video or with limited releases until he eventually got another big break in 2010.
He was offered the part of a drug-addicted assassin to play once more alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in a good old-fashioned high-octane action movie. This was The Expendables. And, if you don’t know, it had about as many knives, guns, explosions, and testosterone as was possible to fit into a single movie.
The movie was a big success and propelled Dolph Lundgren back into the limelight…
Subsequently, he went on to act in The Expendables 2 in 2012 and The Expendables 3 in 2015. The Expendables 4 has already been filmed and is one of his five movies in post-production awaiting general release.
Dolph Lungden still appears in direct-to-video movies and movies with limited releases. However, even though he is in his mid-60s, it is fair to say he is still a popular actor who is never out of work and appears to be never short of offers.
Most people, when they think about Dolph Lundgren’s personal life, always picture him with Grace Jones. That is something I also do. When they were together, they made such a powerful and impactful couple. However, they were only together for three years between 1983 to 1986.
In 1991, he married, for the first time to, Peri Momm, an American girl who was not associated with the movie industry. Sadly, their marriage only lasted a year, and then she disappeared seemingly without a trace.
Three years later…
Dolph Lundgren married for a second time to an American designer, Anette Qviberg. They had two children together and randomly settled in Marbella, Spain. Initially, they rented accommodation for three years before eventually buying a family home there.
Dolph explained that following the birth of his daughters, Ida Sigrid and Greta Eveline, he and his wife wanted to give them as normal childhood as possible. Consequently, they split their time between Marbella and Sweden, where the two girls were born. Dolph would also travel to Hollywood when filming.
Unfortunately, the settled life was disrupted in 2011 when the couple divorced.
Subsequently, Dolph dated Swedish actress, make-up artist, and sports figure Jenny Sanderson. They were together between 2011 to 2017. However, it is thought that he cheated on her during their relationship.
In 2020, he became engaged to the Norwegian personal trainer Emma Krokdal. Born in 1998, she is almost 40 years Dolph’s junior and is younger than his eldest daughter. He has received a lot of criticism for the large age gap, which I frankly find outrageous. This is no one else’s business but their own, and they honestly look happy together.
Dolph Lundgren has been battling cancer for more than eight years. He was first diagnosed with kidney cancer, for which he received surgery and follow-up treatments. The interventions were seen as successful, and all seemed well until, in 2020, he began to suffer from severe acid reflux.
He consulted a doctor for further testing. It was then confirmed that the original cancer had metastasized to his liver. The doctors broke the news that the size of the tumor meant that it was inoperable. Dolph received chemotherapy, but this was considered only a way to prolong life for two years at best.
Thankfully, he sought out a second opinion from renowned oncologist Dr. Alexandra Drakaki. She performed a second biopsy and found a previously undiscovered mutation. Fortunately, this allowed for medication which has subsequently shrunk his existing tumors by 90%. Currently, it is very encouraging, but he is not out of the woods just yet. I am sure we all wish him well for a full and speedy recovery.
Dolph Lundgren Net Worth and Salary
So, what is Dolph Lundgren’s net worth? Considering the number of movies he has been in, the figure is maybe a little lower than you expect. However, he has been through two divorces which will both have had a significant impact on his financial position.
Dolph Lundgren’s exact net worth is not known. But the consensus is that Dolph Lundgren is currently worth a cool $20 million. This is also only likely to grow.
Lundgren continues to act regularly and pulls in approximately $2 million for each project he gets involved in. That puts Dolph Lundgren’s average yearly earnings at about $6 million. I would guess that is more than enough to keep him going.
His last residence was in Hollywood, where he owned a 5,000 square feet home that he purchased for $3.9 million in 2018. It has four bedrooms, six bathrooms and is built in a modern, minimal, open style. In addition, it boasts a movie theatre, gym, infinity pool, and a rooftop deck with stunning views across the city.
It’s a beautiful house that he sold in 2021 for about the same price as he bought it for. His current position, as far as real estate is concerned, is not known. Although, it is fair to say that he will not be living on the streets.
There is no doubt that he will be most remembered as an action hero or villain. Dolph Lundgren’s most iconic roles were in A View to a Kill, Rocky IV, and The Expendables franchise. However, he has appeared in plenty of other movies and has directed and produced a few, too; this is his legacy.
I am sure if you would have talked to the 25-year-old Dolph Lundgren whilst studying chemical engineering, he would have been delighted to know that this was to be the course of his life.
