Floyd Mayweather Net Worth

floyd mayweather net worth

Floyd Mayweather was one of the most successful boxers in history. He dominated the sport across several different weight classes and became one of the most recognized sports personalities and celebrities on the planet.

As a result of his boxing dominance the Floyd Mayweather net worth figure is honestly astounding. I will look at that a little later. But, first, let’s get a feel for the man, and his incredible life and career.

Early Life and Education

Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr. was born on the 27th of February 1977 into a life of hardship and poverty. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but much of his childhood and formative years were spent in New Jersey.

Sadly, he had the misfortune of having a mother who was addicted to heroin and a mostly absent father. Some of his earliest memories were of him coming home with the house littered with drug paraphernalia. He also had to endure sharing a room packed with seven people. Often with no electricity since there was no money to pay the bills.

His father was a professional boxer and had famously gone head-to-head with the incredible Sugar Ray Leonard. His uncle, Roger Mayweather, was also a professional boxer who had been a double world champion.

With this kind of expertise…

It is no wonder that Floyd Mayweather quickly took up training and followed in the family’s footsteps. If for no other reason, he trained because it was something to do and because it was a way to spend time with his father.

This part of his childhood, when he was around seven or eight, varies quite marked depending on who is telling the story. Consequently, it is fair to say that the truth very probably falls somewhere in between.

According to Floyd Mayweather Jr…

The only time he got to be with his father was when he was taken to the gym for training. Other than this, he insists his father was not present and laments that he never experienced a normal childhood.

He recalls that he was never taken to the movies, to the park, to the zoo, or anywhere other than the gym. He also states that he was frequently beaten by his father, which is something never mentioned by Floyd Mayweather, Sr.

In contrast, his father has gone on record as saying that his son never wanted anything and that he always had the best of everything. However, he does openly admit that much of his time was spent acquiring money through drug dealing. Eventually, he got arrested and served time for drug-related offenses.

At the time of his incarceration…

His son was pinging between his mother and father. However, once Floyd Mayweather Sr. went to jail, it was thought that his son should live with his grandmother rather than with his mother.

With his father no longer on the scene, Floyd Mayweather Jr. concentrated his efforts on boxing as an escape from everything else going on in his life. He was studying at Ottawa Hill High School, but his studying and attendance were sporadic.

This was largely because, although his grandmother did what she could, she was unable to cope with Floyd Jr. all the time. Consequently, he began to move between her and his mother, as unsuitable as that was.

Motivated by a need to earn a living…

And encouraged by his grandmother, he set his sights on becoming a professional boxer. But not before he had attained an impressive record as an amateur. Predictably, though, this meant that he dropped out of school at a relatively early age.

Amateur Career

Floyd Mayweather entered the ring in his first amateur fight at the age of ten-year-old on November the 21st, 1987. His opponent was Chris Holden, and they fought at 64lbs at Baker College in Owosso. He won by a knockout in the second round.

Floyd Mayweather’s amateur career spread over a total of 92 fights, of which he lost just six. His early major victories saw him win the Golden Gloves National Championships in 1993. Subsequently, he won in 1994 and 1996 at higher weight categories as he matured into an adult.

Boxing in the 125lbs class, he boxed for America in the 1996 summer Atlanta Olympics. He reached the semi-finals but was deemed to have lost the fight on points to the Bulgarian Serafim Todorov. In what can only be described as a farcical and outrageous decision, Floyd Mayweather ended on the losing side of a 10-9 scoreline that bore no resemblance to the fight.

Put simply; he was robbed…

The American team lodged an official complaint and an appeal but to no avail. One of the American international judges even resigned in total disgust. It left the whole boxing world with a bad taste in its mouth which is not forgotten to this day. It was Floyd Mayweather’s last-ever defeat as an amateur as he turned pro straight after.

Amateur Career

Professional Career

Floyd Mayweather has had one of the most dazzling careers in boxing history. His skills, and particularly his defensive abilities, were just about unparalleled. Pound for pound, he was the greatest boxer of his generation and one of the greatest boxers in history. This helps explain the massive net worth of Floyd Mayweather.

His first professional fight against Roberto Apodaca was on October the 11th, 1996. He won by a knockout in the second round. He then went on to win every single of his 50 fights until he finally retired on August 26th, 2017, at the age of 40, following his fight with UFC legend Conor McGregor.

In between these fights…

He cemented his place in history by winning a total of six championships at five different weight classes. He won 27 of his bouts by either knockout or technical knockout, which refutes the suggestions of some commentators that he lacked a punch.

Some of Floyd Mayweather’s notable bouts included his fight against Miguel Cotto in 2012 and Oscar De La Hoy in 2007. And, the absolute classic against Manny Pacquiao in 2015 in which he won on a unanimous points decision.

Although he retired more than five years ago, that has not stopped him from stepping in the ring for exhibition fights when the money was right. Most recently, he fought the famous YouTuber Logan Paul in 2021 for a cool $35 million for an obvious outcome. Frankly, it all felt a bit pointless to me and did little or nothing for him or his legacy. Not a bad payday, though.

Professional Career

Personal Life

Floyd Mayweather is a bit of an outlier as far as most superstars and celebrities of his stature. So, why is that? Because he has remained single and has made it very clear that he will never marry.

His reasons for this are that he considers the divorce rates so high and that he does not want to take the chance of disappointment. I cannot help thinking he has a point, and when you consider his awful upbringing, it kind of makes sense.

Despite never tying the knot…

It has not stopped him from having four children and sustaining some long-term relationships. They include Josie Harris, the former reality star with whom he has three children, and Melissa Brim, the TV star with whom he has one child. He often refers to his family, so it would appear that this arrangement works for him.

How well this arrangement works for his ex-girlfriends and children is another matter. That is because he has been prosecuted on three accounts of domestic battery and three accounts of misdemeanor battery. The final misdemeanor battery charge, in 2012, was against his girlfriend, Josie Harris.

Frankly, it is disgraceful and even more so that he only received 90 days in jail for his cowardly attack. Given his previous record, as well as a misdemeanor battery charge against a bouncer, he should have got much more. That is what being rich and having fantastic lawyers gets you.

This is all bad enough…

But, he also received a charge for misdemeanor harassment against his own children. For that, he received a meaningless fine, 100 hours of community service, and a 12-month program where he had to talk about how hard things were to some do-gooder counselor.

Again, all an absolute disgrace as well as an utter stain on him as a man and a boxer. He only ever served a total of 63 days despite his crimes.

Floyd Mayweather Net Worth and Salary

There is no doubt that this guy is super rich, but what is Floyd Mayweather’s net worth? The consensus is that he is currently worth around half a billion dollars. He is also only one of six athletes, and the only boxer, to have lifetime earnings over a billion dollars. The others are Michael Schumacher, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Michael Jordan.

That is an enormous amount of money. And what makes it even more remarkable is that he did it with almost no endorsements, and almost half of the money came from just two fights.

So, which two fights were they?

The first was against Manny Pacquiao in 2015, for which he earned $250 million. The second was his final fight against Conor McGregor in 2017, for which he earned $300 million and secured his 50th win. That is $450 million for just two fights which were his last two fights. I would have done them for half of that!

Floyd Mayweather has made no secret about the fact that for him, it is about the money. After all, he is nicknamed Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, and it is not for nothing. When it comes to flaunting his wealth, he is also far from shy.

He is happy to show the multi-millions in his checking account. And, he spends lavishly on things such as private jets at $60 million, watches at a crazy $18 million, a fleet of luxury cars worth tens of millions, and some high-end properties.

Real Estate

Floyd Mayweather owns houses in Las Vegas, New York, and Miami. He bought an eleven-bedroom mansion in Las Vegas for $10 million in 2018 as his main residence. It has a total floor space of 22,000 square feet. Previously, he lived in a little shack, also in Las Vegas, between 2010 to 2018. That cost just $9.5 million with a mere 13,000 square feet of living space. How did he manage?

He bought his Beverley Hills mansion for a cool $25.5 million in 2018. Additionally, he has a New York apartment and an $18 million mansion on the Miami Palm Island waterfront. That is impressive, but there is more.

He also owns a Las Vegas boxing club and strip club. Additionally, he has a major stake in the property investment company SL Green. Plus, he has a part share in One Vanderbilt, which is currently the tallest commercial US building. With so much cash, assets, and investments, he is not going to run out of money anytime soon.

Legacy

For all Floyd Mayweather’s wealth, abusive, violent past, and questionable appearances in movies and TV series, where he usually plays himself, it is all quite honestly just background noise. When we think of Floyd Mayweather Jr., there is only one thing we think of, and that is the boxing.

His incredible talent is something that can never be denied, and his status as one of the all-time boxing legends will never be diminished. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest boxers in history. That is his legacy, and that is how he will be remembered.

Final Thoughts

Boxers like Floyd Mayweather are once in a generation. There have been few like him before, and there will likely be very few after.
