The Buffalo Wild Wings chain now has over 1,200 locations both in the States and in countries around the world. It is a fun, fast-paced restaurant and sports bar chain best known for its buffalo wings, of course. But they’re also known as a friendly, lively place for people to hang out and eat, drink, and watch sports in a comfortable environment.

If you’re a fun-loving people person, working at B-Dubs might be the right choice for you. But before we take an in-depth look at

Why B-Dubs?

The original restaurant opened in Columbus, Ohio, under the name “Buffalo Wild Wings and Weck” because they used to serve beef on a weck bun. This led to the restaurant’s first nickname, BW3. Well, three double-u’s is a lot of double-u’s to say, so it’s just easier to call it B-dubs. You got it?

Jobs For Teens At Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurants

If you’re looking at working for Buffalo Wild Wings and you want to know how old you have to be, the quick and easy answer is 16. However, in some states (West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, Arkansas, and Nevada), you may need to be 18 to work here. Within what is called “school hours,” anyway.

The jobs for teens at B-Dubs are mostly entry-level positions. These don’t always pay very well, but at least they are flexible and part-time. For some, you’ll also get tips. The main jobs Buffalo Wild Wings will hire teens to do are:

Cashier/Greeter

Like many other restaurants, Buffalo Wild Wings locations usually have the cashier and hosting positions rolled together into one job. You have to be at least 16 years old to work in this position.

As a greeter, you’re the host at the ‘front of house.’ This means you’re responsible for greeting customers, handling bookings, and seating people. As a cashier, you’re in charge of taking payments for bills, so you will need to be able to handle a cash register as well as multiple payment options from cash to cards.

Start on minimum wage…

As I’m sure you can tell, the joint position of Cashier/Greeter requires some solid people skills. B-Dubs is looking for people who are friendly, energetic, and genuinely personable. You also need to have some experience in retail or otherwise handling cash and payments.

Cashier/Greeters are usually paid between minimum wage and $13 per hour. If you’re just starting in the world of work, expect to be paid down towards the bottom end of that range. The average wage for cashier/Greeters is $9 per hour.

Server

While Buffalo Wild Wings hires front and back-of-house workers at the age of 16, you need to be 18 years old or older to work as a server. This is because, since this is a Restaurant and Sports Bar, you’ll be serving alcohol as a big part of your job.

The rest of your job is the usual waiter/waitress business. You’ll take orders and collect and serve food and drink from the kitchen and the bar. You usually also have to bus your own tables in most B-Dubs locations.

The tips are pretty good!

Now here’s the catch. Like in most restaurants, B-Dubs is allowed to pay servers less than the minimum wage. This is because they also take in tips. And they do! Servers normally get paid between $3 and $5 per hour but make decent tips on top of that.

As a server here, you can expect to make somewhere between $13 and $20 per hour in the end. Of course, it all depends on how well you do your job plus what shifts you’re working and how many people come into the restaurant.

Kitchen Staff / Cook

The final job available to teens at Buffalo Wild Wings is Cook or Kitchen Staff. Like the Cashier/Greeter, you only have to be 16 years old to do this job in most locations.

However, they do want you to have at least one year of experience working in a kitchen before they’ll hire you. That’s not so easy at 16 years old, but it’s still possible in states where you can start working at 14 years of age.

Perfect the buffalo wings…

As a member of the Kitchen Staff, your main job is to prepare and cook the various menu items that B-Dubs is known for. Of course, the focus is on the buffalo wings, which means you’ll be doing a lot of frying and tossing wings in sauce. There are a lot of other things on the menu as well, plus you’ll help keep the kitchen clean and in proper working order.

As a member of the Kitchen Staff, you’ll be paid anywhere from $9 to $15 per hour, depending on your experience. On average, Kitchen Staff are paid $11 per hour at B-Dubs.

How To Apply?

If you think you have what it takes to work at Buffalo Wild Wings, and you think B-Dubs would be a great place for you, then try applying on their website or at your local restaurant. Staff turnover at B-Dubs is moderate, so try looking for a help wanted posting before applying. Or better yet, go there for a meal and ask your server. They almost always know!

If you get an interview, they’ll want to know what skills you have that will make you a great fit for their business. If you’re trying for a Server or Greeter position, show them that you are responsible and good at managing tasks, but also that you are a friendly, outgoing people person.

Training is required in the kitchen…

That’s the most important thing they are looking for. If you want to work in the kitchen, your previous experience is going to be the most important thing they’ll consider.

If you get a job, training usually takes place right there on the job. As a Greeter or Server, you’ll shadow another staff member for your first couple of shifts to help you learn the ropes. In the kitchen, you’ll be thoroughly trained in the various menu items, probably by the head cook.

And then you’ll get started!

Final Thoughts

The bottom line is that you can start working at B-Dubs if you are 16. Though, you will need to have prior work experience to work as a Cashier or Cook. If you’re 18 or older, you can also get work as a server at the restaurant.

Buffalo Wild Wings is a stadium-concept restaurant, so expect to be working in a lively, fun, and sports-loving atmosphere. If you don’t like sports, or at least can’t fake it, you really won’t enjoy it. But if you do like sports and are a real people person, this might just be a great option for you.

All the very best applying at Buffalo Wild Wings!
