The Learning Curve

Before “R.H Macy Dry Goods” opened as his first New York store, located on the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue. Mr. Macy had started a series of dry goods department stores in Massachusetts, aiming to supply mill workers and their families located in the area.

 Unfortunately, he was well ahead of his time with his ideas and original products, and sadly none of these storefronts succeeded. So after nine years, he had to close all four of them.

Never give up!

Not letting this deter his drive, Rowland soon moved to the big apple and set up his style of department dry goods store, well away from similar kinds of shops, in a different part of town. A wise decision that brought him success from opening day!

The Expansion

Humble beginnings in his New York, 6th Street ventures gave way to expansion into different departments as the years went on. Which meant he needed a lot more floor space for the shop! This came about by expanding into neighboring buildings, and along with all of his lovely household items came made-to-measure clothing for men and women, which were designed, patterned, and sewn in the on-site factory.  

As the brand grew, Mr. Macy drew big crowds with his cutting-edge ideas like illuminated window displays, which were a wonder both day and night. Exciting themed exhibits in his large windows and instore, and bringing Santa Claus to the people during the festive Christmas season. 

A retail revolution!

He was also at the forefront of innovation when he introduced the first money-back guarantee and regular pricing for everyone on his products. These were the days of bartering for goods, and by printing actual prices in the newspaper, he started a retail revolution.

Partnering 

Mr. Macy decided to take on two partners in 1985, a nephew and the husband of one of his cousins. Sadly they all died in succession just two years later. Starting with Mr. Macy in 1877, then the cousin’s husband La Forge in 1878, and the nephew Valentine in 1879. 

Macy’s was run by the family until 1895, when it was sold to Isidor and Nathan Straus, who rebranded to “R. H. Macy & Co,” making it even more of a success!

The Flagship Store In Herald Square

It was in 1902 when many women were able to enter the workforce, and working at a department store like Macy’s was an amazing opportunity for them! 

Macy’s expanded once again into the current flagship store in Herald Square. Which was built especially for the company in all its grandeur as it had become a household name, equal employer, and everyone’s go-to for their shopping needs.

This thrilling new location, which covers almost an entire New York City block and features about 1.2 million square feet of retail space, drew crowds of locals and tourists alike. With the gigantic shop proportions, including 1.25 million square feet for offices and storage. It was no wonder that soon after Macy’s Herald Square opened, it became one of the top employers in New York.

Company Acquisitions

Macy’s was acquired by Federated Department Stores, Inc. in 1994, which was also the umbrella company for the likes of Abraham & Straus, Lazarus, Filene’s, Shillito’s, and Bloomingdale’s. 

The American holdings conglomerate then acquired The May Department Store Company in 2005, and in 2006 consolidated all the individual stores into either a Macy’s or a Bloomingdales. Finally, due to the strength of Macy’s as a brand, the holdings company also changed its name from Federated Department Stores to Macy’s, Inc in 2007.

Most Macy’s Department Stores follow these operating hours. Opening at 10 a.m. Monday to Saturday, while Sunday sees the store opening one hour later at 11 a.m. As for closing, the standard time for Monday – Thursday is 9 p.m. While Friday & Saturday is an hour later at 10 p.m., whereas Sunday has a much earlier closing time of 8 p.m.
