When it comes to fast food, there are two names that come to mind: McDonald’s and Burger King.
These two burger chains have been in a long-standing battle for dominance in the fast-food industry. Each offers its unique menu items and marketing campaigns to lure in customers. But which one is truly the king of burgers?
McDonalds vs Burger King…
On one hand, McDonald’s is the undisputed leader in terms of global presence, with over 38,000 locations in more than 100 countries. Its iconic golden arches and famous menu items like the Big Mac and McNuggets are recognized worldwide.
On the other hand, Burger King boasts a flame-grilled taste that sets it apart from its competitors, and its Whopper sandwich has been a fan favorite for over 60 years.
So, I decided to take a closer look at the similarities and differences between McDonald’s and Burger King, comparing everything from their menus to their marketing strategies.
So, whether you’re a die-hard fan of one or the other, or just looking for a fast-food fix, it’s time to find out which burger chain comes out on top.
Stacking It Up
Which is Bigger, Mcdonald’s or Burger King?
When it comes to the number of outlets, McDonald’s is the clear winner, with over 14,000 locations in the United States alone. And as mentioned, worldwide, McDonald’s has more than 38,000 locations, making it the largest fast-food chain in the world. McDonald’s has an equally strong presence in the US, Asia, and Europe, with the majority of its locations being company-owned.
And Burger King?
Well, Burger King has around 7,000 locations in the US and 18,000 locations worldwide. But, while it may not have the same number of outlets as McDonald’s, Burger King has a significant presence in countries like Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Moreover, Burger King’s strategy is to focus on franchising, with approximately 99% of its locations being franchised.
So, in terms of domestic presence, McDonald’s is the clear leader in the US. However, Burger King has been closing the gap in recent years, with plans to expand its presence in major cities across the country.
Then, with regards to global reach, McDonald’s is, again, the clear winner with locations in over 100 countries, while Burger King has a more focused presence in certain regions.
How do their U.S. sales compare?
When it comes to sales in the US, McDonald’s has consistently been the leader in the fast-food industry. Last year, McDonald’s generated over $37 billion in sales in the US alone, making it the top fast-food chain in terms of revenue. In fact, McDonald’s has a remarkably strong foothold in the US market, with its affordable pricing and menu items that appeal to a wide range of customers.
Burger King, in contrast, has struggled to keep up with its rival in terms of sales. According to the latest stats, Burger King generated around $10 billion in sales in the US.
A rather significant difference to McDonald’s…
Yup, despite efforts to revamp its menu and marketing campaigns, Burger King has yet to regain the market share it once held. So, McDonald’s remains the undisputed king of fast food in terms of sales.
Prices Comparison: Burger King vs McDonalds
When it comes to prices, both McDonald’s and Burger King offer affordable options for fast food lovers. However, there are some notable differences in their actual pricing strategies.
In the US, McDonald’s has a reputation for offering some of the most affordable fast food options available.
The McDonald’s Dollar Menu, which features items like McChicken sandwiches and cheeseburgers, has been a popular choice for budget-conscious diners for years. While the prices of its premium items like the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder can vary depending on the location, they still generally fall within a reasonable range.
And you probably already know…
Burger King, on the other hand, tends to price its menu items slightly higher than McDonald’s. While Burger King also has a value menu, its premium items like the Whopper tend to be priced slightly higher than comparable items at McDonald’s. However, Burger King has also been known to offer promotions and deals to compete with its rival, such as the two for $6 sandwich deal.
Overall, while there are some differences in pricing strategies between McDonald’s and Burger King, both offer relatively affordable options for fast food lovers.
When it comes to menu choice, McDonald’s and Burger King have their own unique offerings that set them apart from each other.
McDonald’s has a broad menu with several iconic items that have become synonymous with the brand. The Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, and Chicken McNuggets are some of the most popular items on the menu. McDonald’s also offers a variety of breakfast options, such as the Egg McMuffin and McGriddles.
Plus, in recent years, McDonald’s has expanded its menu to include healthier options like salads and smoothies.
Some might say a burger is a burger, but…
Burger King is known for its flame-grilled burgers that have a distinct taste. The Whopper, the chain’s signature sandwich, is a fan favorite and has been a staple on the menu for over 60 years.
They also offer several other burger options, including the Double Whopper and Bacon King. And in addition to burgers, Burger King has a range of chicken sandwiches, salads, and sides like onion rings and mozzarella sticks.
High-value offers…
Both burger chains have value menus that offer affordable options for customers. McDonald’s has its Dollar Menu, while Burger King has its Value Menu, which includes items like the Bacon Cheeseburger and Chicken Jr. Sandwich.
Overall though, both McDonald’s and Burger King offer a variety of menu options that appeal to different tastes and preferences. While McDonald’s has a more extensive menu, Burger King’s flame-grilled burgers and sandwiches give it a unique edge.
Ultimately, which one you prefer will come down to personal taste and which items you enjoy the most.
Burger King vs McDonalds Marketing Strategies
When analyzing advertisements and marketing approaches, it’s clear to see that both McDonald’s and Burger King have distinct approaches that have helped them stay relevant in the fast-food industry.
McDonald’s has a long history of memorable marketing campaigns that have helped solidify its brand image. The “I’m Lovin’ It” jingle is a well-known tagline that has been used in McDonald’s advertisements for years.
The company has also collaborated with celebrities like Justin Timberlake and LeBron James in its ads. So, McDonald’s has been successful in creating a brand that is associated with fun, family-friendly dining experiences.
A little riskier is…
…Burger King. Which has taken a more controversial approach to its advertising in recent years. The chain has launched campaigns that have been provocative and edgy. Including the “Whopper Detour” campaign that encouraged customers to go to McDonald’s locations to unlock a discount on a Whopper!
Cheeky!
Burger King’s advertising strategy is firmly rooted in comparing itself favorably against its main rival. Whilst Mcdonald’s focuses more on itself than the competition. Something they can afford to do given their dominant market position.
Both chains have also embraced social media in their marketing strategies. McDonald’s has a strong presence on platforms like Instagram and Twitter, where it regularly posts engaging content and responds to customer feedback. Burger King has also been successful in creating viral campaigns on social media. Such as the “Whopper Neutrality” campaign that aimed to raise awareness about net neutrality.
Neck and neck…
So, both McDonald’s and Burger King have run successful marketing campaigns. And these have helped them stay on top in the fast-food industry. But, while McDonald’s has a more traditional approach to its marketing, Burger King’s more provocative campaigns have been successful in generating more buzz and attention.
How Does Burger King’s Customer Service Compare to McDonald’s?
Customer service is an essential aspect of any business. And in the fast-food industry, it can make a significant difference in customer loyalty and satisfaction.
Both McDonald’s and Burger King have put significant efforts into improving their customer service in recent years. McDonald’s has implemented several initiatives to streamline its services, such as self-order kiosks and mobile ordering. These allow customers to place their orders and pay in advance.
McDonald’s has also invested in employee training programs to improve the quality of service provided by its staff. And the company has also introduced curbside pickup and delivery options. Making it more convenient for customers to enjoy their meals.
Clever…
However, Burger King has also made some similar clever efforts to improve its customer service. The chain has introduced a new digital ordering system. This allows customers to place their orders in advance and skip the line. Plus, Burger King has also invested in employee training programs. Additionally, the chain has implemented a mobile app that allows customers to customize their orders and pay in advance.
So, it’s much of a muchness in this area, but…
Hilariously, Burger King trolls the McDonald’s Facebook page relentlessly. They reply to customer complaints by offering them a link to a free Whopper! They also generally have a more welcoming atmosphere and shorter queueing time, although this could be to do with having fewer customers.
So, that’s a bit of a bittersweet win…

Final Thoughts
Burger King and McDonald’s are two of the most recognizable fast-food chains in the world, and both have their unique strengths and weaknesses.
McDonald’s has a more extensive menu and a reputation for family-friendly dining experiences. While Burger King is known for its flame-grilled burgers and provocative advertising campaigns.
Ultimately, it will come down to personal preference on which of these fast food behemoths you prefer. But if we are looking purely at outlet numbers, sales revenue, menu options, and price, McDonald’s is the clear champ.
But Burger King has been making valiant efforts to catch up with the ground it lost to Mcdonald’s over the last 20 years. However, as of yet, they have failed to do so, leaving McDonald’s as the undisputed reigning King of burger producers.
Sorry, Burger King.
