Safeway History 

Safeway was founded in 1915 in American Falls, Idaho, by Marion Barton Skaggs. He was only 22 years old at the time! The first store was called Safeway Portals, and it was just 1,600 square feet. Skaggs later bought his father’s grocery store in American Fork, Utah, and renamed it Safeway Stores. He then expanded the stores by buying other grocery store chains.

Safeway continued to grow, and by 1926 it was operating in California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Utah. In the 1930s, it became the first grocery store chain to offer self-service shopping and open meat and produce counters. It was also the first grocery store to offer in-store pharmacies.

Expansion, expansion, expansion!

The supermarket continued to grow, and by the 1960s, it was the largest grocery store chain in the United States. In 1968 it was bought by a holding company called Consolidated Foods. 

Consolidated Foods then changed its name to Safeway Inc. They expanded in the 1970s and 1980s by buying other supermarket chains. In 1986 it bought a Canadian supermarket chain called Dominick’s Finer Foods. The store then moved into Europe in 1988 by buying a British supermarket chain called Argyll Foods.

Taking their business international!

In their bid to take over the world, the store then entered the Australian market in 1995 by buying a supermarket chain called Woolworths Limited. However, Safeway sold its European operations in 1998 and its Australian operations in 2005.

The Chinese market was entered in 2006 when they partnered with a Chinese company to open stores in Beijing and Shanghai. In 2012, it was announced that they were selling their Canadian operations to Sobeys for $5.8 billion. By 2015 the chain had merged with Albertsons and was operating under the Albertsons name. The Safeway brand is still used in some stores but is slowly being phased out.

Safeway Today

The brand is still going strong and is continuing to expand. It is now present in 27 states across the United States. The store offers a wide range of products, including groceries, pharmacy items, and household items. It also has a wide variety of services, such as home delivery, online shopping, and in-store pick-up.

Safeway is also known for its fuel program, which offers discounts on fuel to customers who shop at the store. It is now worth over $9 billion and employs over 250,000 people. Safeway is a trusted brand that offers excellent products and services to its customers.

Safeway Hours 

Most stores are open for around 16 hours a day during the week. Typically, this is from 6 am to 10 pm. However, some stores are open 24 hours a day. 

Weekend Hours 

The majority of the grocery stores are open on Saturday and Sunday. However, the hours may be different from the weekdays. Typically, stores are still open from 6 am to 10 pm on Saturday but may open a bit later on Sunday, often at 8 am. Again, this can vary from store to store, so it is always best to check with your local Safeway.

The store is open on most holidays; however, some, such as Christmas eve, have reduced hours.

To find your local store, visit the Safeway website and use the store locator tool. Simply enter your zip code or city and state, and a list of stores in the area will be displayed. The store hours will also be listed. You can also call customer service or use google maps to find a store near you.
