Can you Return Makeup at Target?
Target accepts returns for makeup whether it’s been opened or not. The best timeframe to do this is within 90 days of purchasing the products. You should also take the original receipt with you.
While this is great news, especially for makeup enthusiasts, there are a few things you need to take note of. These include the type of makeup that can be returned, the difference it makes when you buy makeup using a Target RedCard, and why your return request may be rejected.
Can You Return Makeup After 90 Days?
While the 90-day time frame is the standard period, you can still return makeup after 90 days, but there’s a catch. You can return items up to 120 days later if you buy the makeup using a Target RedCard.
A Target RedCard works pretty much the same way a debit or credit card works. When you use it for your shopping, you get 5% off at Target and https://www.target.com/Target.com. You also get an additional 30 days for returns and exchanges on all items that apply.
You can return after one year!
It gets better! If your makeup is a Target-owned brand, you can return the product within the first year of purchase.
You can also still return your purchase after 90 days even if you didn’t buy it using a Target RedCard and it’s not a Target-owned brand. The catch is that you won’t receive a full refund. Alternatively, you’ll be given a gift card which can only be used in-store.
What Is The Target Makeup Return Policy Without A Receipt?
Let’s face it! Most of us throw away receipts the minute we leave a store. It’s almost a reflex to act that way. If you find yourself in this predicament, you’ll be happy to know that you can still return makeup to Target regardless. All you have to do is provide alternative proof of purchase.
If you used a Target RedCard, Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, personal check, Discover, or a Target gift card, then Target can find your order online. The item will show up in your account as a purchased item. You also have access to the digital barcode or e-receipt from your Target.com account. However, if you bought your makeup using cash, the purchase can’t be tracked.
They can reject the return…
If you’re still keen on returning the makeup without proof of purchase, you can get a “merchandise return card.” This card is only valid in-store and can’t be redeemed online. Target has the right to reject your return request if you don’t have any proof that you purchased your makeup from them.
Here’s a tip! After shopping, put the receipts in a box or bowl that’s placed either in your kitchen or living room. Keep the receipts for at least a month, and when you’re satisfied with your purchase, then you can throw the receipts away.
How Can You Return Used Makeup?
We already noted that you can return opened and unopened makeup to Target, but you might need more details regarding returning used products. While it’s possible to return used cosmetics, they should only be slightly used.
Since the makeup would have been opened, you’ll be required to return it within 90 days of purchase together with the original receipt. If your cosmetics are opened or damaged, and you don’t have a receipt, Target has the right to deny you a refund or exchange.
Don’t take advantage…
Target will not accept returns on products that have been used up or are nearly finished. Their return policy also applies to defective products, including dried-out makeup. You’ll also have 90 days to return the products with the original receipt.
How Can You Return Makeup Purchased Online?
Shopping online has proven to be convenient and time-saving for many people. If you happen to purchase your makeup from Target.com and would like to return it, you can go to any store with your proof of purchase. Use the e-receipt, the barcode found in the Target app, or Target’s delivery or shipping confirmation email. The confirmation email usually has all the makeup product details.
You can also mail your products to the Target Online Returns Center through Target.com. You’ll have to pay for the return shipping fees. The only way you could dodge this fee is if Target made an error when they shipped the products to you.
Not all products can be mailed back…
However, not all cosmetic products can be mailed to the Target Online Returns Centre. If you’re not sure whether you can mail your makeup or not, don’t worry! You’ll be notified when you’re processing any item on the website.
What Happens When Target Denies Your Return?
Sometimes your request can be denied. If this happens in-store, you can always donate the cosmetics. If the Target Online Returns Center denies your request, the item will be shipped back to you. There’s no extra charge for the shipping, and it’s normally done within seven days via FedEx.
While Target denies returns for different reasons, these are some of the common reasons:
- It was not returned within 90 of being purchased.
- The item is damaged or worn.
- The item is almost fully used up.
- There was no proof of purchase.

Target Makeup Return Policy – Final Thoughts
In a nutshell, Target’s makeup return policy makes it possible for customers to return opened makeup. However, it should be returned within 90 days of purchase. There are exceptions made if you would’ve bought your makeup using a Target RedCard, or if it is a Target-owned brand cosmetic. You can either return makeup in-store or by mailing it. And the best way to guarantee to get a return is to provide a receipt.
If you don’t have a receipt, you can provide an alternative proof of payment that works in your favor.
Good luck, and enjoy shopping at Target!
