Does TJ Maxx Have A Dress Code?
Yes, like many other chain retailers in America, TJ Maxx does have a dress code that is in place for all its employees. So, if you are about to join the team, then you must adhere to this every time you are working.
Thankfully you’ll be pleased to know that the TJ Maxx dress code is pretty straightforward and manageable. You are required to wear your own clothes (no uniform required), and the look is smart casual or business casual.
Does TJ Maxx Provide Uniforms?
It’s a no. TJ Maxx does not provide uniforms, as employees do not require a uniform. This is why there are specific dress code guidelines to follow while wearing your own clothes.
TJ Maxx Dress Code For Employees
TJ Maxx is all about fast fashion, so even though you aren’t required to wear your best, it does pay to embrace your inner fashionista and dress smart, sharp, and appropriately. At TJ Maxx, you are required to follow some simple dress code guidelines.
Smart and modest clothing, nothing revealing or tight, or with holes, distressing, or rips in it. Long or short sleeve shirts are acceptable, with or without buttons or a collar. You can choose to combine this with long slacks, pants, knee length or long skirts meanwhile jeans are also allowed. They just have to be neat with no rips, holes, or distressing details.
Closed shoes and neat hair…
You’ll need to wear fully enclosed shoes and have your hair combed and in a neat style. Whereas long hair needs to be pulled back away from the face.
What’s Not Allowed?
You are not permitted to wear revealing clothing like athletic wear and tight-fitting clothing. Also, clothing items like crop tops, see-through tops, or pants. Nothing with holes or rips. Plus, no flip-flops, open-toed shoes, or sandals.
You aren’t allowed to wear shorts, that’s a requirement for both men and women, so no cut-off jeans, boardies or jean shorts. For the guys, no footy or sports shirts, singlets, or vests are permitted.
No logos or slogans…
Also, your clothes must be slogan, logo, and graphic-free. So pretty much plain Jane and block colors. Beanies and hats are not permitted to be worn in-store while working. Meanwhile, ladies’ tops cannot have thin spaghetti style straps, be strapless or with a low cut, sweetheart, or revealing neckline.
What About Shoes?
Thankfully, TJ Maxx permits you to wear pretty much any type of footwear, as long as it completely covers your feet. For safety reasons, that means an enclosed toe and enclosed heel is a must. Think trainers, boat shoes, boots, espadrilles, brogues, Chelsea boots, canvas shoes, sneakers, and loafers. This will help to prevent accidents, ensure protection and keep you safer.
Can I Wear A Hat?
No, you can’t. Hats and beanies are not allowed to be worn while working your shift at TJ Maxx, and it’s the same rule with sunglasses sitting atop your head or larger headbands or scarves. However, head scarves are permitted to be worn for religious reasons.
What About Leggings Or Yoga Pants?
Unfortunately, it’s a big no, and for several reasons. TJ Maxx does not allow yoga pants, leggings, joggers, or capri pants to be worn while working your shift. These types of garments can be seen as being too casual, too revealing, or too tight for appropriate business attire.
What If I Usually Get Cold When Working My Shift At TJ Maxx?
If you tend to get cold while working your shift, then you are permitted to wear a jacket. The temperature can vary from store to store, and everyone runs on a different temperature scale. However, it’s a big no to hoodies; you’ll need to have a smart casual or business casual style jacket or sweater to hand instead.
Hair And Makeup Requirements
Currently, TJ Maxx has no prohibited policies in their handbook against hair color or makeup. Each store may differ, and it is up to the discretion of management. However, if you are always neatly presented, with long hair tied back from the face and no completely outrageous hair color combinations, you should be fine.
It’s the same for makeup. Daytime, office-style makeup is readily accepted. Just make sure it is not too bright or offensive, like a full face of heavy makeup ready for your big night out…
Tattoos And Piercings
Typically, visible tattoos and multiple piercings are not allowed. TJ Maxx requires you to cover up any tattoos while working your shift, while any offensive tattoos are unacceptable. Multiple earrings are fine as long as they are small and smart. However (and really, this depends on each store location), facial piercings are allowed at the discretion of management.
Can I Get Fired If I Don’t Follow The Dress Code?
Yes, you can. As with any employer, TJ Maxx has the right to fire any employee who doesn’t adhere. You might even be required to sign your acknowledgment and compliance with the dress code when you first join the TJ Maxx team.
Now, it’s highly unlikely that you will get dismissed after your first dress code violation or even your second. However, if you are a repeat offender, then you might find yourself fired for this very reason.

However, we think the dress code is pretty inclusive and flexible, and it serves to give employees the freedom to feel comfortable wearing their own clothes. Remember to dress for comfort, as some days are long, and you will be thankful in the end that you did.
