Dollar Tree Beginnings
On April 27, 1989, the first “Dollar Tree” branded store opened at the Jessamine Mall in Sumter, South Carolina. The product of three partners, K. R. Perry, Doug Perry, and Macon Brock. They had already found success together with chain store K&K Toys, which they started in 1970.
In 1986, the trio founded a new discount concept store, opening five locations across three states known as “Only $1.00”. These were the first stores where every item only cost a $1.00 bill.

Quick Road To Success
After opening the first Dollar Tree in the previous month, an advertisement in the Sun-News in May of 1989 catapulted the start-up chain into the spotlight by cementing its dollar-pricing model as the latest trend. It quickly became the “hottest new shopping concept in America” and saw 100’s of new stores opened across the country soon after.
The new store concept grew exponentially from here, prompting the partners to relinquish ownership of K&K Toys Company to KB Toys in 1991.

The Dollar Tree Brand is born…
This allowed them to focus solely on the discount stores. Which culminated in all existing stores under their belt being rebranded to Dollar Tree Stores in 1993. 2004 saw Dollar Tree open its first North Dakota store, which cemented its presence in all 48 mainland states.
By 2006, Dollar Tree boasted 3,000 store locations, and 2008 saw it trading as a Fortune 500 company. 2009 was the year sales really took off online thanks to the new look of their e-commerce site. However, it was 2010 when big changes happened…
Crossing Borders
Not only did they open its 4,000th location. It also took over its neighboring country’s equivalent, Dollar Giant, in Canada. This began its presence outside of the US in four Canadian provinces, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
Today, Dollar Tree can be found in 48 states and five Canadian provinces. The company has over 16,000 stores in its conglomerate. With 200,000 associates and operates under several other banners, including Dollar Bills and Family Dollar. All these shops are kept in motion with a nationwide logistical network of 24 distribution centers.
