A Brief History Of Hulu

A Brief History Of Hulu

This American subscription streaming service was launched in 2007. In many ways, the company was ahead of its time and struggled to attract subscribers in the initial years. While there was an attempt to sell it in 2011, the idea was dropped due to relatively low bids.

Hulu has been managed by several different organizations over the years. These include The CW, Fox, and Showtime. Each of these organizations has added its shows to the streaming service over the years.

What about Netflix?

One of the company’s main competitors has always been Netflix. However, in the last five years, a number of other streaming services have proven to be serious competition. As a result, the heads of Hulu realized they would have to offer something special to remain relevant.

Hulu’s saving grace came from the Walt Disney Company in 2019. They decided to invest heavily in Hulu and take on a majority partnership. Disney made a deal with Sony Pictures in 2021 to stream their content on both Hulu and Disney+ after leaving Netflix.

Disney takes over…

As a result, many popular Disney movies and shows are leaving Netflix. In the future, this content will only be available on Hulu and Disney+. This business move is designed to attract a large number of Disney lovers and perhaps draw them away from Netflix.

In 2013, sections of News Corporation were purchased by 21st Century Fox. These shares were purchased by Disney along with other shares in 2019. The reported cost of this takeover was $71.3 billion.

AT&T also sold its 10% stake in the organization in 2019. At present, Comcast owns 33% of the total shares, with the rest belonging to Disney. However, there are plans for Comcast to sell its shares to Disney by 2024. This will give The Walt Disney Company full control over Hulu, which is currently estimated to be worth $27.5 billion.

Major Roles At Hulu TV

All of the company’s key executives now report directly to the Walt Disney Company. The organization has been significantly restructured in recent years. Here are the main people who hold positions of power at the organization.

Who Owns Hulu? – Final Thoughts

More than 46 million people are currently subscribed to the Hulu streaming service. A large part of the reason for this is the joint partnership between Walt Disney and Comcast. In terms of Halu ownership, the Walt Disney Company owns 67% of the shares, while Comcast controls the remaining 33%.

The involvement of the Walt Disney Company has provided the streaming service with a range of additional content. This is now the only streaming service where Disney movies and TV shows are broadcast. A range of other exclusive content is also produced for the streaming service and released each year.

Enjoy watching your favorite shows on Hulu!
